Read My Lips: Victorian

September 05, 2009

Just a quick post because I've been lax lately and haven't worn makeup all week! Went for a swim in the afternoon (1km, half free and half fly) and then my friend "Jasmine" called to see if I wanted to go raid the WholeFoods bakery department - so naturally I said yes, and threw on a quick face. (So quick, in fact, that I took these pictures after we got back! When it was dark and the lighting in my bathroom was crappier than usual! Yay!)

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base (all over); Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream

Face: Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer kit in Porcelain (under eyes, set with White powder); Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick in Alabaster; Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish pressed powder in White (to set)

Brows: Urban Decay Brow Box in Brown Sugar (darker shade)

Lashes: Bobbi Brown Everything mascara (black)

Cheeks: MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Blonde (shades of pink)

Lips: NARS lip stain gloss in Victoire (dabbed on, then blended with finger), topped with a very small amount of MAC Suntints lip balm in Full of Grace

I didn't have time for shadow or liner, nor really the inclination... just wanted to look vaguely presentable (non-swimsuit clothes and a brush through my post-pool hair!) so I could snag an eclair and some Wild Berry Sparkle Tea (which is like candy-flavored crack in a cup). I've got a family reunion tomorrow, so I'll try to do a look, and I need to catch up on the blogginess for sure (and get in as much pool time as I can, because it closes on Monday, waaahhh!) In the meantime, thanks for reading, and have a fabulous (long) weekend!

Face of the Day/From the Files: The Real Ivy League

August 30, 2009

So this morning I was playing with the Bobbi Brown Ivy League Collection for fall (LOVE, by the way - absolutely madly in love with the whole damn thing!), instead of doing my actual work...

This is what resulted:

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base (all over); Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream (eye area); MAC Oil Control Lotion (t-zone areas)

Face: MAC Studio Sculpt concealer in NW15 (under eyes); Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish pressed powder in White (under eyes); MUFE Mat Velvet+ foundation in 15 Alabaster; MUFE Hi-Def finishing powder (all over)

Brows: Urban Decay Brow Box in Brown Sugar (darker shade)

Lids: Too Faced Shadow Insurance; Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash shadow in Golden Leaf (inner half of lid); BB Metallic shadow in Bash (outer half of lid); BB Matte shadow in Ivy (crease); BB Metallic shadow in Maple Sugar (from Nude palette) as blend/highlight

Liner: Bobbi Brown longwear gel liner in Forest Shimmer Ink (applied with MAC 209 brush)

Lashes: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara (black)

Cheeks: BB blush in Desert Rose

Lips: MAC lipstick in Lovin' It

With the ultimate Ivy League accessory, for added realness:

I'm starting to get used to my glasses now. It's nice to be able to see things :-p so I'm starting to feel face-naked without them. Also, my sister chopped off about six inches of my hair yesterday (I just wanted a trim, but... she was "evening things out" and it just went badly, gahh!), so my hair is considerably shorter than I usually wear it. It's still long by most standards, but I'm kind of confused by the short swingy-ness of it!

And finally, a pretty picture of a place that I really want to be right now:

Anyone want to guess where this was taken? (People who know me in real life, and therefore know *exactly* where this is, are disqualified from answering.) Bonus points if you can tell me which part of the structure this is...

Anyway, thanks for reading/looking! Hopefully I should have new stuff to share with you soon :-)

This is what Oxford students do in their spare time...

August 30, 2009

If they're members of Trinity College Boat Club (read: crew/rowing team), anyway. For the past three years, the men's First VIII at the winter boat race (called Torpids) has produced a fantastically cheesy, blatantly lip-synced boy-band pop video. The result is pure... something. Gold, cheese, drool-worthy goodness... take your pick! I couldn't, in good conscience, keep them all to myself anymore - this is one secret that's gotta be shared! Enjoy responsibly, and make sure to drool-proof your keyboard before watching :-)

Massive Haul: Bobbi Brown, Makeup Art Cosmetics, MUFE, Laura Mercier

August 28, 2009

Hello again! I've been up to my usual shenanigans, y'all! (To be fair, I *have* been saving up for Bobbi Brown's Ivy League collection and MAC's Makeup Art Cosmetics collection since I heard about them months ago, so... it's less bad than you'd imagine.) Anyway, I think I'll let the products speak for themselves. I've got some looks in the works, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to posting them - too much work for my own good these days :-( (Plus it's stupidly hot in DC at this time of year and I go to the pool and swim laps like twice a day, just because it's so unbearable... which means makeup is not really a brilliant plan most days.)

In this pic: Bobbi Brown Lip Crayon Trio; Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara; Tarte MultiplEYE lash enhancer (both Tarte products won on BellaSugar); Bobbi Brown shadows in Bash (metallic), Ivy (matte), and Golden Leaf (shimmer wash); Stila Cherry Crush lip & cheek stain; Bare Escentuals Buxom lip pencils in Brooklyn and Barcelona; Laura Mercier lip stain in English Rose; Bobbi Brown longwear gel eyeliners in Ivy and Forest Shimmer Ink; Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Velvet Plum; Nars Lipstain Gloss in Victoire; Christian Siriano for VS eyeliner (black); Laura Mercier sheer lipstick in Tender Lips

In this pic: MAC quads in In the Gallery (purples) and Notoriety (neutrals); MUFE Mat Velvet+ foundation in Alabaster; Laura Mercier Lip Velvet in Naked Rose and Scarlet Passion; Bare Minerals Buxom gloss in Dolly; MUFE AquaEyes liner in 16L (green); MAC lipglass in New Spirit; Laura Mercier sheer lipstick in Bare Lips

In this pic: all MAC goodies! Studio Moisture Tint in Light; quad in Photo Realism (greens); blush in The Perfect Cheek; eyeshadow in One-Off; Suntints lip balm in Full of Grace; lipstick in Lovin' It

And finally, a bunch of samples and things: Armani Code, Les Delices de Cartier (which smells amazing!), Armani Code Sheer, Pucci; Laura Mercier Foundation Primer (Mineral) and Tinted Moisturizer (Illuminating); LM Foundation Primer; Hourglass tinted moisturizer; Philosophy Microdelivery deluxe sample; AmorePacific eye cream; Urban Decay lipstick; Perricone Ceramic Skin Smoother

There's a few things I still want from the Makeup Art Cosmetics collection, which I've got a bunch of Back2MACs saved for, but this is kind of my last hurrah before going back to school in October - none of the fall/holiday collections, with the exception of the Bobbi Brown Earth Metals palette, really interest me, plus I'm already starting to experience Finals Panic (tm). Gah. Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed the makeup porn :-p and hopefully I'll be able to do a look or two soon (I need to remember to take pics more often, grr). In the meantime, have a great weekend, and live it up these last few days of summer!

Random-Eyes: Fantasea

August 22, 2009

Hmm, I seem to be slacking in my blogging. I blame the stupidly hot Washington summer. I'm barely wearing makeup these days because 1) I'm not going outside, I'll either burn or melt, or possibly both! and 2) I'm just now getting my skin back on its best behavior, I don't need sweat and makeup gunk ruining all my hard work! But I did go out for Thai lunch (what else?) with a good friend, "Jasmine" (the one who did my henna), and it was kind of cool-ish outside, so I figured I'd do some gender-performing and put on a full face of makeup. The original inspiration for this look is from the summer Sephora catalog, but it ended up being much darker/brighter, because I just don't have enough makeup... (Yes, that was sarcasm.)

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base (all over); Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream (eye area only); MAC Oil Control Lotion (t-zone only)

Face: MAC Studio Sculpt concealer in NW15 (under eyes); MAC Studiotint tinted moisturizer in Light (all over); Bobbi Brown blemish concealer stick in Alabaster (or possibly Porcelain? I can't read the label anymore...); MUFE Hi-Def finishing powder (over top of face makeup & blush)

Brows: Urban Decay Brow Box in Brown Sugar, darker shade

Lids: Too Faced Shadow Insurance; MAC shadow in Cool Heat (inner third), MAC Freshwater (middle third), MAC Parfait Amour (outer third), MAC Blue Flame (crease), UD Shattered (browbone/blend on inner half of lid), MAC Beautiful Iris (browbone/blend on outer half of lid)

Liner: Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Black Ink, applied with MAC 209 on upper lashline, lower lashline, and upper waterline (and, as you can see, I have been practicing my upper lashline technique - with much thanks to my BFF, khorshid khanoom!)

Lashes: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! (Black)

Cheeks: MAC powder blush in The Perfect Cheek

Lips: Urban Decay Ultraglide lipgloss in Video

Then there was Thai food and Thai iced tea (my favorite!), which actually had perfect timing because the second we got inside the restaurant it started to *pour* rain and thunderstorm like crazy for more than an hour. And I normally like thunderstorms, but the AC was on so high in the restaurant that I was shivering! In August! In DC! That's not supposed to happen!

Also, as you may note, the blush I used is from the new MAC collection - I bought the Photo Realism quad, The Perfect Cheek blush (which totally lives up to its name, btw!), and a lipstick, and I've got a ton of Back2MAC that I'm going to haul into the store this weekend and swap for some of the lipsticks and glosses. I can't decide if I want the other two quads. I might possibly pick up the Violet Trance shadow, too... hmm. Anyway, I've done some serious hauling recently and I should really get off my arse (or more precisely, *on* my arse) and get some makeup-porn pictures together for you lovelies. But in the meantime, thanks for reading, and hope you're having a great weekend!

Winnings: It's a Lash Bash!

August 07, 2009

Oooh, looky what was in my inbox yesterday!

I'm not normally a huge lash/mascara person (I mean, I always wear mascara, but I don't obsess over the state of my lashes, unlike my best friend), but I'm quite interested to try the Lash Enhancer - and I certainly wouldn't have bought it, so this will be a fab opportunity. Yay for BellaSugar giveaways!

I'll try and have a proper post soon, but in the meantime, thanks for reading and stay fabulous!

Before & After: Shattered Gold

July 27, 2009

Sooo this was a pretty busy week and weekend for me - I had a huge dinner party on Saturday evening, and three friends came to stay (and two of them did the tourist thing), and it's just been nonstop craziness... but one of my friends, we'll call her... Marta (not actually her name)... who I met in Spain, but who is actually from Germany but passes for American (complicated, right?) wanted me to do her makeup. She's not as makeup-crazy as I am, yet, but we're going to the MAC Pro store in NYC next week, so that might change. Anyway, have you ever known me to turn down the chance to play with makeup? Of course not.

This was the top she wanted to coordinate with for the trip home: paisley print, with yellow-gold, blue and pink on black.

And this is her before I got started: (apologies for the bad lighting - and the random stuff in the background, haha)

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base; Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream (eye area)

Face: Basic concealer (German brand) in Shade 01, mixed with MAC Studio Finish concealer in NC15 (for undereye area); Maybelline Wonder Finish foundation in Sand; BE Mineral Veil (as finishing powder)

Cheeks: MAC blush in Pink Swoon

Brows: UD Brow Box in Brown Sugar (lighter shade)

Eyes: Too Faced Shadow Insurance; MAC shadow in Goldmine (inner half of lid); UD shadow in Shattered (outer half of lid); MAC Femme-Fi (on browbone); Bourjois Metallic Eyeliner in Bleu Cliquant (on upper lashline)

Lashes: MAC Plushlash (black)

Lips: NARS lipstick in Señorita; ck Calvin Klein Delicious Light lipgloss in Brilliant Pink

She has fab skin, awesomely highlight-able cheekbones, and is super-easy to work with - didn't even flinch when I moved in with the freshly-sharpened eyeliner pencil!

And behold, the transformation!

And, of course, I forgot to take a pic with her eyes open. *sigh* Yes, I'm a dumbass. Please forgive me. But I hope you enjoyed - let me know if you like this feature and/or would like me to rope more of my friends into being makeup models :-D I've got a few more posts in the works, including a little birthday haul, but this week is going to be a massively studying-focused week (except for the Pro store :-p), so I'm not sure when I'll have time to post (but I will! I promise!). Anyway, thanks for reading, and see you soon!

Random-Eyes: Somewhere Over the Rainbow

July 17, 2009

This look actually has nothing to do with The Wizard of Oz. (Sorry.) But I was playing around with my Bobbi Brights palette tonight, and wanted to try making a rainbow just for kicks. It was easier than I thought, although blending was a real b*tch.

In rainbow order, the shadows are: Watermelon (red/pink), Samba (orange), Nugget (yellow/orange), Shamrock (green), Blue Denim (bright primary blue), and Mulberry (plum-purple). I placed a tiny bit of MAC Carbon in the crease, and blended like a madwoman using UD matte shadow in Foxy and MAC Ricepaper. (All on top of a base of Too Faced Shadow Insurance.) I used the MAC 228 brush to place each of the colors, working from the inner corner outwards, and the MAC 239 and an angled blending brush from the Sephora/Kat von D brush set to blend the crap out of the crease and browbone.

Liner: Bobbi Brown gel liner in Black Ink on upper lashline, and MAC Kohl Power pencil in Feline on upper and lower waterlines

Lashes: BE Buxom Lash (black), several coats (I actually really like how my lashes turned out... it's almost enough to make me start putting it on the lower lashes, but maybe not quite yet.. :-p)

Long and pretty voluminous, wouldn't you say? And when I've got my eyes open all the way, you can't even tell I'm smuggling rainbows on my eyelids! (But ARGH! stray hair that keeps getting in my face! It's really annoying... stupid summer humidity!)

Brows: Bobbi Brown eye shadow in Mahogany (matte deep brown)

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base (all over); Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion Pore Perfecting (all over); Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream (eye area)

Face: MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in NC15; MAC Studio Sculpt concealer in NW15 (under/around eyes); BE Mineral Veil (as finishing powder); MAC Blot Powder (pressed) in Light (on T-zone)

Cheeks: MAC blush in Peaches

Lips: Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color in Nectar

I think it turned out pretty decently, and it's not actually horrendously unwearable (by my standards, although even I probably wouldn't turn up to an interview or a tutorial with anyone but my main tutor, with this much color on my face). I was more impressed by the Primer Potion for face this time around, simply as a base layer (I think it's easier to work with than Prep+Prime), although I'm decidedly disappointed by the lack of oil-control and still might return it, because I don't think it will be very useful to me if it has no oil-controlling capabilities at all.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and have a great weekend! It's my 21st on Friday, so I'll be pretty much MIA all weekend, but hopefully will have goodies upon my return to Sugar! Lots of love xx

Read My Lips: Jailbait (and thoughts on new Urban Decay products)

July 14, 2009

If you're on the Urban Decay mailing list like I am, you probably got an email not too long ago announcing the launch of more than 30 new products for fall. If you're a makeup whore like me with itchy fingers, you probably zoomed over and picked up as much loot as your bank account would permit, amirite? (Of course I am.) I got the new Primer Potions for face and lips, a tube of Jailbait lipstick (not new, but w/e), and the new Ink for Eyes cream eyeliner in Loaded.

Base: Bobbi Brown Vitamin-Enriched Face Base (all over); Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream; Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion in Pore Perfecting (just on T-zone)

Face: MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in NC15; BE Mineral Veil (as finishing powder); MAC Studio Sculpt concealer in NW15 (under eyes)

Brows: Bobbi Brown shadow in Mahogany (matte deep brown)

Eyes: Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer; MAC shadow in Creme de Miel (all over lid, and as highlight); MAC shadow in Buckwheat (in crease); UD Ink for Eyes cream liner in Loaded on upper lashline

Lashes: BE Buxom Lash mascara (black)

Cheeks: MAC blush in Peaches

Lips: UD Lip Primer Potion; UD lipstick in Jailbait (peachy-nude)

General thoughts on the new UD collection, or what I've tried so far:

- I really like Ink for Eyes. I've been looking for a nice green eyeliner (not sage/olive green, or teal, or green with glitter... just... green!) for a while, and Loaded should do pretty nicely. It's very pigmented, and very extremely smooth in its application (like Fluidline in that respect - I find that BB gel liners are a bit more difficult to work with sometimes). It stays creamy for longer than either than Fluidline or Bobbi Brown (not sure about Stila, I didn't think to run that particular experiment), so you can smudge and blend it more thoroughly if you wish. It doesn't really *dry* like the aforementioned gel liners, and I'm not quite sure why, but unless you're rubbing at your eyes, it shouldn't be a problem. (I didn't get the dreaded eyeliner-on-the-browbone that sometimes happens with inferior-quality liners, which is normally what befalls me if a liner stays sort of wet.) The applicator brush is of a decent size, and is actually really nice quality - I was able to make a good, medium-thick line across each lid with the angled end; I haven't tried out the spongey blender end, but it's quite small and seems like it would be useful for smudging in a more subtle way. (If such a thing is possible?) The packaging, of course, is absolutely gorgeous, with an elaborate peacock rendered in color on the cardboard box and then again in greyscale on the plastic container. A mirror runs the full length of the lid, but it seems more suited for touchups or on-the-go application. The only complaint (and it's not really a complaint, just a warning of sorts) I have is that in all the promo photography, and even when you open the box, it looks like it should be an emerald or kelly green - but it's not. It's a forest green. Not a really dark one, but still definitely not true bright green. (I'm going to continue in my quest to find a beautiful bright green liner, though - MAC Chromaline in Landscape Green is my next target!)

- Lip Primer Potion tastes like rat poison. Seriously. (Okay, that's not entirely true. It just tastes like rat poison when you put lipstick over it. BUT STILL!) They should have done a little (or a lot?) more R&D on this one, because I don't mind a tasteless primer or a slightly flavored/fragranced one, but I *do* mind tasting a revolting mix of paint thinner and shoe polish every time I lick my lips or take a bite or a sip of something. You can't just make the eye primer into a stick and call it lip primer! Gross taste aside, it's passably decent as a primer - it made my lipstick last for ages, although not through an entire meal and drinks (we had Ethiopian for dinner, yum!) - but make sure to exfoliate your lips first, or it'll be chunky/goopy/generally unpleasant. I'm going to try it out with a few different lipsticks to see if it improves at all (I've only tried it with UD lipsticks in Jailbait and Apocalypse, so far), but if not, I'm probably going to return/exchange.

- I like Jailbait lipstick (I know it's not new, but I just bought it...). The formula is creamy and smooth and fairly sheer, and it smells pretty nice (although you'd never guess if you're wearing it over the UD lip primer!). The primer makes it a bit more matte and intense, but it photographs pretty true. I've had UD lipsticks in Gash and Rush for quite a while (maybe a year? I can't remember when they came out...), and I just picked up Apocalypse the last time I was at Ulta. I'm also intrigued by two of the new shades - Naked and Confession, but I want to try them out in person, because it's quite hard to tell what they'll look like from the swatches.

- I'm still a bit undecided re: Complexion Primer Potion. I put it on over my Bobbi Brown Face Base (more of a moisturizer than a primer), and it didn't give any problems (no grittiness or shedding/peeling, *ahem* Smashbox!). It definitely mattified my skin instantly and made my pores look way smaller, giving a very smooth finish. I didn't have any of the usual troubles when applying foundation over it, either (I used the MAC 190 brush), and I was able to blend pretty vigorously without causing flaking bits of primer... which happens on occasion even with my HG, MAC Oil Control Lotion. But... it doesn't seem to be super oil-controlling in the long-term, as the product description would indicate. I had to powder my T-zone twice in five hours, which honestly isn't *that* much, compared to the oil-spill days of my youth, but is still more often than I would like to have to think about my oiliness levels (once at lunchtime and once before dinner, and that's it!). I'll probably try this out a few more times before I make a final decision.

Apologies for the essay, but thanks for reading! I'll post further and final thoughts on the primers later this week or early next week, if you're interested.

Good Tunes: Altan, "Dúlamán"

July 13, 2009

As you might have guessed, language is really not a factor when it comes to the music that I like. It's rather a point of pride, actually - although I think it might also have to do with the fact that I'm a linguist (or at least, that's my excuse!). Most of what I listen to is in Spanish, but my iPod has a decent selection of various kinds of folk music, too - and Altan is high on my list of favorites. Lead singer Mairéad ni Mhaonaigh has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and anything she sings, whether in Irish or in English, is magical.

This song, "Dúlamán," is a traditional Irish tune, very upbeat and cheerful and perfect for singing along. And Mairéad gets serious props in my book for being able to sound exactly as awesome live as she does in recordings.

Unfortunately, I don't speak any Celtic languages (yet!), so I can't translate; I only know that "dúlamán" means seaweed. But there's a good explanation and translation to English here, as well as the Irish lyrics should you want them.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the song, and thanks for listening!
