Winnings!

March 04, 2009

My doorbell just rang a minute ago, and I was kind of surprised - people rarely use our front door, not even the UPS man. But no, it was the FedEx guy - and he brought me a little surprise package, from Sugar Headquarters! I won the Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair sprays a while back - Sunshine Shield Spray and Beach Waves spray - and they've finally arrived. And I'm very excited! :-D

Of course, it would be pouring rain and freezing cold today, so I probably won't have the chance to test them. But I'll try to get some sunshine and let you know how they perform!

Read My Lips: Russian Red

March 04, 2009

Read My Lips is what I shall be calling my lip-look posts - assuming that there's more of them, which I certainly hope there are! This one features one of the most notorious of MAC lipsticks - the impossibly bold Russian Red, worn by Miss Dita Von Teese herself. It is not for the faint-of-heart.

I actually acquired Russian Red a couple of months ago, when I was still in Oxford. It was a rainy Saturday, and my friend/tutorial partner and I were struggling desperately with our weekly essay. We took a lunch break, and I walked to the MAC store (conveniently located two minutes from my room; very bad for my wallet) and bought Russian Red, thinking that maybe if we looked slightly ridiculous, it might cheer us up. We sat around her college after lunch in our bare faces and bright red lips, laughing at each other and our essays.

We wore it straight from the tube, mainly because we didn't have anything else to do with it. I added some eyeliner later, but no face makeup. Yikes. (Just focus on the red lips, it'll be fine :-p) But it is truly a fun color, and a great way to put some cheer in your day!

Hauling: MAC Cult of Cherry, and some other stuff

March 04, 2009

Sooooo...

I may have mentioned a time or two that I have been worshipping the MAC fall collection, Cult of Cherry. And saving my dinero...

This, my friends, is the result:

Tempting Eyes quad, Spiced Chocolate quad, Rich & Ripe lipglass, Liqueur lipglass, Cult of Cherry lipglass, Kirsch mattene lipstick

The quads are really fun - the Spiced Chocolate one actually contains neutral-type colors that are unlike any found in my stash (Brash and Sweet Chestnut are deceptively neutral in that picture - they're actually pretty unusal shades!). Of the lipglasses, Cult of Cherry is truly amazing - it's a gorgeous red that I actually really like on its own; it's very bright and cheery and fun!

I also have Russian Red and O lipsticks, which are part of the permanent collection - so I didn't need to buy them. I've been considering Cream Cerise and Lightly Ripe lipsticks, but I think I have enough colors that are similar that I don't really need them. (Yes, I did just say that I was going to *NOT* buy makeup. Don't faint, please! :-p )

I also swung by my friendly neighborhood Sephora, where I picked up a lot less:

I got a set of four eyebrow stencils by Anastasia, which are going to be really useful, I think. The most common thing my friends want me to do for them is to pluck, thread, and shape their eyebrows for a party/formal/dinner/night out. The day before my college ball, I threaded eyebrows for FOUR of my friends. And my sister lets hers go during the school year, and the second I get home, she whines at me - "But you said you'd do my eyebrows!" - until I fix them. This little package will make my life much easier :-D

I also got a lovely NARS lipstick called Señorita - and I didn't buy it for the name, despite what some people might say about my tendency to do things like that... *whistles innocently* It's a sheer, shimmery rose color, and it's almost the exact shade of my lips (my lips aren't shimmery, obviously), so it's barely noticeable.

And I got some Oscar Blandi samples, which look interesting, but I have yet to use them. And I got a lip balm at Victoria's Secret, because... well, I'm addicted to VS, and I can never, ever have enough lip balms. Ever.

I haven't really had a chance to do any looks or anything recently because my grandmother's been in the hospital, and my sister, my mom and I have been taking turns staying with her. Plus there's lots of house-cleaning going on, because a couple of my friends from England are coming to stay! But there will be looks, I promise. And it won't be too long.

Besos, and thanks for reading!

Random-eyes: Shimmering neutrals

March 04, 2009

Welcome to Random-eyes, my (hopefully recurring) random eye looks feature!

This look is fairly light and neutral for me, and I would think that it's work-safe if you wanted to replicate it.

Brows: lightly filled in using the darker shade in Urban Decay's Brown Sugar brow box.

Lids: I used Urban Decay Primer Potion as a base; then I smudged Stila shadow in Golightly along the upper lash line. Next, I applied Stila shadow in Wheat all over my lid, slightly higher than the crease. I used Stila shadow in Starlight on the browbone, then lightly lined my lower lid with Golightly, smudging Wheat over top of it to soften the color. (I used the smudging brush and the fluffy brush from the Kat Von D set to do all this.)

Liner: I lined inside the upper lid (tightlining) with Bobbi Brown gel liner in Black Ink, using a MAC 209 brush. Then I lined the lower waterline with MAC Kohl Power pencil in Feline.

Lashes: a couple of coats of MAC Plushlash in Plushblack.

Tunes: "Hate That I Love You," Rihanna ft. David Bisbal. I almost always listen to music while I play with my makeup, so I'll share my sounds with you, too!

Enjoy!

Welcome to my blog!

March 04, 2009

I haven't maintained a real blog in a long time (four years?), mainly because of school and... life, I guess. But since I'm going to give it another shot with Team Sugar, I'm thinking about the things that I'm likely to talk about around here.

- Makeup: rather obvious, no? Product reviews, stash & haul pictures, and as many looks as I can post!

- Music: a big part of anyone's life, I should hope, and an especially important one in mine. I have rather eclectic taste, tending toward international sounds, but I'll share my songs of the moment. Hopefully you'll enjoy them as much as I do!

- Travel: I'm about to go on my year abroad to Spain, and I'm going to be visiting friends in other parts of Spain and maybe France, as well as going back to England (school), the United States (home), and hopefully Morocco (just for fun). I'll give you pictures, random thoughts, and complaints about airports and border control everywhere (hint: all bad!).

- Anything you want to ask me! (Within reason, of course. Makeup, music, flamenco, figure skating, Spanish, linguistics, and medieval literature are the topics most likely to get you somewhere. Calculus, not so much.)

- Randomness. Could be anything. Who knows where this will take me?

Some of this will be cross-posted with my year abroad/schooltime blog, but I have a sneaking suspicion that most of the friends who read that won't be so interested in my makeup habits!

Anyway, thanks for reading, and have a fabulous day!

*besos*

Taking a break...

February 09, 2009

You may notice that there are no longer any posts on this page.

Some people from my real life went to the trouble of finding this blog for the singular purpose of humiliating me. I was honestly devastated, because my OnSugar site has been a bit of an outlet for things that are simply fodder for teasing to my friends, and now something that I truly enjoyed has been ruined for me.

I'll probably come back eventually, but for the moment, I'm just going to put this site on hold. I'll probably still comment on Bella and BPJ, because I won't stop loving makeup, but I'm going to be keeping a much lower profile here on Sugar. Maybe in a few months, or a year, I can work up the courage to come back and post again, but right now, that doesn't look too likely.

And if in the future I ever have another makeup blog, I'll pick a less-predictable user name. And keep my face off of it.

Life lessons, I suppose.

Anyway, this is goodbye for now. Sorry.
